There is a global demand for the biotoxins for use as analytical standards for monitoring programmes. These compounds are also of interest to pharmacological researchers. Cawthron is one of a handful of organizations in the world with the expertise to culture large volumes of these organisms and efficiently purify the bioactive compounds.

Cawthron has provided NRC-IMB - with variety of marine biotoxins for production of certified reference materials. NRC-IMB specializes in producing well characterized calibration solutions and we thoroughly recommended these solutions as reference materials for primary calibrations. These solutions are usually not concentrated enough to make mixed standards for multi-toxins methods or for fortifying samples, an important QC step in most analytical methods. CNC allows labs to calibrate their own secondary standards from well characterised starting material.
