Coastal processes are complex, and assessing land-sea interactions through field-based research can be difficult and expensive. Coastal modelling can assist in forecasting and visualising temporal and spatial changes in ecological conditions.
Cawthron's capabilities in this area include:
- Hydrodynamic simulations and particle tracking at local and regional scales
- Forecasting water column characteristics in response to changes in river flows or point-source discharges
- Modelling of depositional footprints associated with aquaculture farms
Past modelling projects have included identifying suitable locations for aquaculture, simulating cumulative nutrient enrichment from multiple fish farms at regional scales, and predicting the effect of increased freshwater discharge on the physical characteristics of Doubtful Sound.
