Cawthron's Science Week Poster Competition excites local children
The Cawthron Institute Trust Board, as regional sponsor of Science Week, recently asked Nelson school children 'What does Science mean to you?', the answer to be illustrated in a poster competition to celebrate National Primary Science Week May 2nd – 7th.
Cawthron Institute's Community Educator Jo Thompson says "We received some absolutely stunning entries to the competition clearly a great deal of thought, attention and time went into these posters."
The Annual Science week is organised by the NZASE (National Association Science Educators) with the goal of enhancing the teaching and learning of science through professional development for primary teachers and also to celebrate science throughout New Zealand Primary Schools.
Judene Edgar, Secretary of the Cawthron Institute Trust Board said "Cawthron has a special affinity with the goals behind Science Week and it is fantastic to see such young children interested and excited about science, as the poster entries clearly demonstrated"
School children from years 0/1 – 7 could enter the competition and prizes were swimming passes for the ASB Aquatic Centre to the winners with Science Kits for their schools.
Cawthron's regional Science Week support also involves field trips for teachers to learn about freshwater ecology, and the provision of resources for the classroom as well as a presentation by a Cawthron Institute Senior Scientist.
Sterling Cathman, Nelson Region Co-ordinator for the NZASE, said this week aims to make people more aware and excited about primary science and feed on the curiosity of the little ones.
Presentations to the winners are occurring throughout this week in schools and you can view the entries during Science Week at the Richmond Mall.
