The wellbeing of New Zealander’s relies on the goods and services that our ecosystems provide. These include provision of air, water, food, habitat, climate regulation, pollution assimilation, environments and resources for leisure and cultural activities. The New Zealand economy is also underpinned by natural resources that support our agricultural, horticultural, forestry and seafood industries. Therefore, how we allocate resources in terms of land, sea space, and freshwater, is critical for our future wellbeing.
Cawthron has world leading expertise in resource allocation issues and these include knowledge and tools for understanding the full costs and benefits of alternative land and water uses (aquaculture, fishing, customary use etc) and the allocation of freshwater. Cawthron can provide advice on the environmental, economic and social costs and benefits of alternate resource uses in terms of equitable and optimal outcomes.
Making the most out of the resources that we do use is also a key theme for the Sustainable Business Group. For example gaining the most value from every cubic metre of water, and every kilogram of raw material is a key strategy for industries that are limited by resource availability. Cawthron has expertise in value adding in a number of primary industries with particular expertise in the seafood sector.
