Sustainable Technology
Sustainable technology focuses on technological innovations that lead to long-term competitive advantages but feature minimal environmental impacts. By explicitly addressing environmental interactions at the design stage, future compliance problems can be avoided or minimised.

For example, Cawthron is working with the New Zealand aquaculture industry to develop innovative sustainable technical solutions, for example, the Exposed Waters Aquaculture program. See below.

Exposed waters aquaculture in New Zealand

Cawthron is working with major seafood companies and Iwi in New Zealand to develop sustainable, profitable exposed waters aquaculture systems. This involves developing novel farming and husbandry methods using existing industry knowledge, and developing new knowledge through the construction and application of complicated numerical models. These models simulate the interactions with the structures and crop with the environment, bio-economic models for risk identification and minimisation, and extensive field trials to test the systems have been undertaken. An integral part of this project is the development of an Environmental Management System tailored to exposed waters aquaculture operations.

Renewable energy

New Zealand has a no-nuclear policy and renewable energy in the form of wind power, and to a lesser extent geothermal power, is critical for underpinning New Zealand society. Cawthron works closely with renewable energy suppliers in New Zealand by provide advice on the resource utilisation, and effects planning and assessments.
