Cawthron New Zealand River Awards Announce $10k cash prize for Catchment Progress Award

The Cawthron New Zealand River Awards have announced that the 2021 winner of the Catchment Progress Award will take home a $10k cash prize.
Previously called the ‘Most Improved River’ Award, the renamed ‘Catchment With Most Progress Toward River Health’ Award also has new judging criteria that make the Award category more holistic.
The Award winner was previously selected by judges after analysis of data from the national Land, Air, Water Aotearoa database, however from 2021 onward, catchment groups must submit an entry to be shortlisted for the prize.
Cawthron New Zealand River Awards spokesperson Elizabeth Bean said a webinar has been scheduled to help answer any questions from prospective entrants in the new Award category.
“We recognise that this is a new approach in 2021, and some entrants will have questions about their eligibility, the judging criteria and the entry process, so we thought we’d get everyone together for a short and informal webinar to provide clarity and guidance,” Bean said.

Entries in the ‘Catchment With Most Progress Toward River Health’ Award category close on 30 July 2021.
Background
The New Zealand River Awards have been running since 2013 to celebrate the efforts and achievements of people who are committed to improving freshwater health. The objectives of the Awards are to:
- Improve the health of New Zealand’s river and streams
- Encourage greater community participation in measuring and reporting water quality
- Highlight the actions being taken to restore freshwater health.
