ABSTRACT
This volume of the New Zealand Journal of Botany comprises articles submitted following a one-day symposium on diverse aspects of algal and cyanobacterial biology. This symposium, held on 24 August 2015 at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson, was attended by over 40 scientists, with 24 short talks and a dozen poster presentations over a broad range of topics. Participants, mostly from New Zealand but including several from Australia, represented 15 agencies including universities, research associations, Crown Research Institutes, regional councils, and industry and biotechnology enterprises. The meeting was jointly supported by the Cawthron Institute, University of Otago and Massey University, and followed a similar very successful forum held at the University of Otago on 7 December 2012, which also resulted in a special issue of this journal (Eaton-Rye et al. 2014Eaton-Rye JJ, Packer MA, Summerfield TC, Wood SA.2014. Algal and cyanobacterial bioenergy and diversity. New Zealand Journal of Botany. 52:1–5. doi: 10.1080/0028825X.2013.877947[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®], [Google Scholar]). The aim is to hold this meeting every 2 to 3 years and to be as inclusive as possible, encouraging participation from all interested parties of the phycological community. For instance, there is no registration fee for the meeting, and free venues are chosen. This encourages university student attendance, and there were a good number for whom this symposium was the first public dissemination of their work. [...]
