Opening the Doors to Cawthron’s Aquaculture Park

5 November 2025

More than 200 people visited the Cawthron Aquaculture Park in Glenduan last week to learn more about the science supporting New Zealand’s aquaculture sector.

The annual Open Day on Saturday attracted 120 visitors, with tickets selling out in less than two days. And, for the first time this year, Cawthron also offered dedicated group tours on the Friday, welcoming residents from local retirement villages and a Probus club for a more tailored experience.

Located on a 20-hectare site just 15 minutes from Nelson’s CBD, the Park is a world-class research and technology hub that supports sustainable aquaculture and marine science innovation. Visitors toured the boulder bank and algae ponds, explored the National Algae Centre, and heard directly from Cawthron scientists about their research.

Established in 1993 with a small research facility, the Park has grown into a thriving hub of around 100 staff representing Cawthron, industry, research, and education partners. Recent developments at the Park include the Finfish Research Centre (opened in 2018) and the National Algae Centre (opened in 2021). The site also features purpose-designed wet and dry laboratories, intensive algae culture facilities, and nursery systems supported by managed algae ponds.

“Our open days always generate strong community interest,” said Elizabeth Bean, Cawthron Trust Board Manager, “It’s great to see so many people eager to learn about the work happening here and how it contributes to sustainable aquaculture and healthy marine environments.”

Some feedback from visitors this year included:

  • “The enthusiasm with which your scientists engage in seeking further understanding of our natural world is inspirational”
  • “Hearing from your passionate scientists and support staff is the memory I will take away…. I have a thirst to learn and know more.”
  • “Thank you for a truly memorable visit. We were astounded and excited with what we learnt.”
