Tertiary scholars join Cawthron for a summer of science

20 November 2025

This week Cawthron welcomed four tertiary-level students who will spend the summer working on research projects ranging from marine pests to lake restoration.

Cawthron’s Summer Scholarships give students the chance to experience the challenges and rewards of real-world research. The programme is a key part of our outreach and education efforts, designed to inspire the next generation of scientists by sharing our research.

Established in 2016, and open to students enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary institution, the $7,500 scholarships provide students with 10 weeks of full-time research on a project at Cawthron Institute. They are funded by bequests and donations to Cawthron Institute Trust, with the Pītau Whakarei Karahipi scholarship also supported by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga – a Māori Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) based at the University of Auckland.
