Cawthron’s first online Annual Lecture attracts global audience

30 October 2020

Cawthron Institute’s first live-streamed Annual Lecture has been lauded by online audiences as a huge success after attracting an audience of thousands from New Zealand and abroad.

This year’s 77th Annual Lecture builds on a long-legacy of talks from distinguished scientists and scholars, from Sir Ernest Rutherford to the Rt Hon Helen Clark, however the 2020 Annual Lecture was the first lecture event Cawthron has delivered on a digital platform.

The event featured keynote speeches from Dr Siouxsie Wiles, Associate Professor at Auckland University, and Dr Serean Adams, Aquaculture Group Manager at Cawthron Institute. These addresses were followed by a Q&A panel discussion with both speakers, and Dr Chris Cornelisen, Group Manager for Coastal Sciences at Cawthron Institute. The Q&A panel discussion was facilitated by local business coach and consultant Johny O’Donnell.

Hundreds of questions were submitted by audience members on subjects including the Covid-19 pandemic, aquaculture industry potential, New Zealand’s investment in R&D, social media and misinformation, and STEM career pathways.
