New dates for Scitec Expo

27 August 2021

Students have more time to enter Cawthron’s Scitec Expo following a decision to delay the annual event until the end of October.

The Scitec Expo is an annual school science fair for students (Years 1 – 13) throughout the Nelson Tasman region. Registrations were due to close today, ahead of the event being held next month.

The deadline for online registrations has been extended until Friday 1 October and the Expo will now take place in the week starting October 26 (second week of term four).

Cawthron Event co-ordinator Karen Goodger said the organising committee held an emergency meeting this week to reconsider the timetable in light of the current COVID19 lockdown.

“Over the last few days some teachers and schools have expressed concern that they were unable to register entries until they were back in the classroom with students to review the work they had done on their science projects.

“Schools and tamariki were working really hard on this prior to lockdown and we felt postponement was crucial to ensuring everyone received a fair shot at completing their projects and entering the expo.

“We also hope it will remove some of the additional stress that teachers, schools and parents are generally under at this time.”

Work is underway to confirm further details for the new event. These details will be emailed to entrants and added to the Scitec page on Cawthron’s website, when they become available.

“A big thanks to everyone – sponsors, teachers, entrants, and all the volunteers involved – for their patience and understanding.

“The expo is about promoting a greater interest in science and technology amongst our youth and we remain fully committed to delivering on that.”
